We are very sorry to report that one of our Society's Vice-Presidents, Geoffrey Cope, passed away after a short illness last Saturday, 26 September 2015. Geoffrey was a real gentlemen and a long time friend of Bernard Holden. He made the valiant journey from Eastbourne to Sheffield Park and thence to the AGM in Burgess Hill in May - all by train, to prove it could be done!Geoffrey was a highly regarded and much respected civil engineer but moved over to the P/Way engineering side and was always willing to share his knowledge, to encourage others and to provide advice. He was definitely old school and had a no-nonsense approach but there was never any malice. He was editor of the Permanent Way Institution's 6th edition of "British Railway Track: Design, Construction and Maintenance", published in 1993.
His funeral was at Eastbourne Crematorium on 13th October at 1:45pm. The family requested no flowers, but donations may be made to RedR, an engineering-based charity which provides training for, and delivers professional and practical expertise to, disaster areas.
