VOLUNTEER APPEAL FOR
Tunn el Working Evenings, Summer 2005

Every summer, P-Way department volunteers spend a few evenings giving the tunnel its annual check-up, and this year is no exception. Since there is plenty of work to do this year, we have expanded the number of working evenings to be held, hence any extra volunteer help would be greatly appreciated, and this is where YOU come in!

tunnel 20/07/04
Work underway in the tunnel during one of the work evenings last year.

You don't need any previous experience to join in, and there will be a variety of work on offer, including fishplate servicing, jacking and packing, and possibly (in some of the later meetings) rail replacements. Since the tunnel is normally strictly out of bounds, these evenings provide a unique opportunity to experien ce its atmosphere away from the carriage window!

The dates for this year are...

  • Tuesday 26th April
  • Wednesday 18th May
  • Thursday 2nd June
  • Wednesday 6th July
  • Tuesday 9th August
  • On all five days, we will meet at Horsted Keynes at 5pm for a 5.10 departure in the Wickham trolley (although if you could spare an hour or two before hand to help with the preparation s it would be particularly appreciated!) For anyone who wishes to come straight from work, it is also possible to park at West Hoathly and join us from there from 5.30pm onwards. We will work until 9pm, with a return to Horsted Keynes by 9.30pm at the latest.

If you are interested, please take a look at this page, which gives more general information about volunteering in the P-Way department, and then email Paul Norris so we know to expect you and can keep you informed of any changes to plans.

We look forward to meeting you in the summer!
