The final stage of fitting the firebox side stays is now in progress.
Having screwed each stay into position in the two layers of platework which form the firebox, the last stage is to knobble over each end, somewhat in the fashion of a snap-head rivet. This performs two functions: it seals the thread to prevent leakage past the threads, and on the inner end it prevents the stay end being burnt by the fire.
