The "spare" C-class boiler

Phil Stoneman needle-gunning the spare C class boiler - Stephen Lacy replacement C class boiler - Rob Faulkner

The boiler fitted to No.592 at its 2006/7 overhaul came into preservation after use as a stationary boiler at Ashford. This was not the boiler from No.31271 (which had been, after withdrawal, used as a stationary boiler). It came labelled with number "5", which we assume is in the stationary boiler number series. It is likely to have been in stationary use for some time, from the time its predecessor was condemned, and it was taken out of the pool of spare C boilers.
